SLBC In The News Again!

There is a great article about St. Louis Bridge Center in the June issue of "Ladue News". Thank you to our very own Alice Handelman for writing this wonderful article.

Click here to read the article.

St. Louis Bridge Center has a BIG HEART

The LONGEST DAY event was an enormous success! Not only did our team raise awareness of the devastating disease of Alzheimer’s, but it also raised more than $33,000 for the treatment of and research. The St. Louis Bridge Center now ranks 3rd in the nation among the participating ACBL teams, and our Team Captain Linda Powers ranks 1st among individual captains.

THANK YOU to everyone whose generosity made this possible. Event co-chairs Linda Powers and Jane Ettelson, and raffle/auction chair Mary Ellen Strebeck formed a solid framework for this effort. All of you donated money, asked friends to support us, sponsored tables, attended our three charity games, played in the marathon June 21st game (54 tables), donated auction items, bought raffle tickets, sponsored tables, made in-kind contributions, cooked hot dogs, baked, decorated and supported this effort in every way.

Part of what made this year’s effort so compelling was that Linda Powers, with her husband Warren’s encouragement, shared that he, a former professional football player and beloved head football coach at Mizzou, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. There is currently no cure. While we all know or are related in some way to a person living with Alzheimer’s, their brave acknowledgement gave our bridge community a shared patient and caregiver, and caused us to reflect upon and share more about family and friends we know who are dealing with this disease.

You again showed that not only are we a group of people who like to play duplicate bridge, but we are also friends and a powerful community willing to work together in support of a worthy cause. All of this is what makes the St. Louis Bridge Center so wonderful. THANK YOU!

Barbara Seagram Was a Huge Success - Thank You to All Attendees!

Barbara Seagram’s first appearance at the St. Louis Bridge Center was an unqualified success. She had twenty or more tables for each of her three seminars on “Defensive Strategy/Signaling in Suit Contracts,” “Defending Well Against No Trump,” and “Taking More Tricks- Improving Your Declarer Play.” She donated multiple copies of her books and cheat sheets to the Bridge Center.

Barbara’s qualifications as a bridge player and teacher are first rate: she is the co- author of more than 18 bridge books, including the award-winning “25 Bridge Conventions You Should Know” (co-written with Marc Smith), a Master Teacher, a former member of the ACBL Board of Governors and a recipient of the Audrey Grant Award for Teaching Excellence. She and her husband Alex run the Barbara Seagram School of Bridge in Toronto, where she teaches over a thousand new students a year to play the game of bridge. She was also a moving force behind the ACBL Zero Tolerance policy.

In addition, Barbara devotes her energy into helping those less fortunate have access to education and medical care. In Cambodia, her efforts have helped build and sustain three schools, and her next project is to build a family health clinic. In Laos her fundraising has been in support of providing water filters to ensure families have clean water.

Those interested in reading her newsletters, getting information about her books or upcoming lectures and bridge cruises, or learning more about her Cambodia and Laos fundraising efforts should go to www.barbaraseagram.com. We look forward to her next visit to St. Louis.

Visiting Artist Series

We are pleased to showcase some great artwork by our own Diana Votaw. Diana has been a fiber artist for more than 30 years. She started with traditional quilting techniques which gradually morphed into a modern style that is her own. As well as dying all her own fabrics, Diana designs marbleized fabric which she makes by hand. She uses a variety of quilting techniques, from hand appliqué to intricate piecing with machine and hand quilting to experimental techniques. Ms. Votaw has won numerous local awards and many of her creations have been selected for international shows. Diana has created many commissions to meet clients needs; her work is displayed in private collections across the country.

Additionally we are displaying photographs by Diana's daughter, Emily Doerner. Emily is a fine-art photographer living and working in New York City. She recently graduated from the prestigious Photography and Imaging program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, with a secondary major in English and American Literature. Her recent BFA photography thesis used a GoPro to capture an experiential portrayal of the unconscious mind. Much of her work shares this focus on the subtle, often overlooked, beauty in the everyday. She makes the normal abstract, forcing her viewers to shift their perspective. Emily will be pursuing a masters degree in Art Therapy at the School of Visual Arts in New York this fall.

Free Learning Opportunity - Post-Game Analysis

We are currently offering a Post-Game Analysis session after every Thursday morning game. This is a FREE benefit to SLBC members. One of our experienced players (“pro”) will be available after the game to spend about 15-30 minutes reviewing the hands that were played in the session. The attendees can ask questions about hands that were troublesome for them and/or the pro may have a couple of examples that he/she noted during the game. This is a tremendous opportunity to help players of all levels improve their game while the hands are still fresh in their minds. It is also another benefit of playing at SLBC.

To access the system all you need is your ACBL number.

Swing Players Needed
